2 - July 1, 2008 ART IN THE CITY HALL
ROTUNDA features fabric art created by
Lee Ann Walker.
Five years ago Lee Ann Walker decided to
take a step backward in her life. Back
in 1984 Lee Ann and Bart bought WGNS
radio and moved to Murfreesboro to run
what became the “family business”.
Working in advertising sales and
promotions for the station and raising
two very active children, Scott and
Kristin, became a full-time job. After
many years at WGNS, with her son coming
in to manage the station on a full-time
basis Lee Ann decided it was a good time
to get back to her art.
Back in Nashville she taught art in
the Nashville/Metro schools, Volunteer
Community College and Watkins Institute.
Lee Ann also earned her Master of Arts
degree from Peabody/Vanderbilt
University. At Peabody, as well as at
MTSU her major was Ceramics. Her wall
hangings were exhibited in shows and
galleries in Memphis, Nashville,
Evansville, Ind., Alabama and Georgia.
She has had works in the TACA Biennial
and exhibited in a 3-person fiber show
in Cheekwood’s Botanic Hall.
As a member of the TN Association
of Craft Artists she has served in a
variety of committees and offices of
including President of Cumberland Valley
TACA and state President of TACA. She
served for many years on the board of
the TACA TN Craft Fair and the Fall
Craft Fair in Centennial Park in
Nashville. When they moved to
Murfreesboro she was serving her 2 nd
year as Chairman of the TN Craft Fair.
She was also finishing her 15th year as
an exhibitor at the juried fair.

Each piece of fabric art represents
traditional quilt and appliqué
techniques. A mix of hand dyed and
commercial fabrics are used. She
is known for her bright colors and
imaginative modern designs.
In Murfreesboro Lee Ann kept her
interest in the arts alive by being
involved in the Rutherford County Arts
and Humanities Council and the Stones
River Craft Assoc. Classes in fiber
design, quilting fabric dying and
participation in Cindy Phiffer’s
workshop based on “The Artist’s Way”
book by Julia Cameron helped to get her
back on track. Lee Ann has been creating
bright wall hangings and pillows that
she sells at the Stones River Crafts
Association Studio tour each fall. Today
sewing and fabric design has become her
full-time profession and she loves every
moment of it. |
